Our Vision, Mission, and Values

Our Vision

Be the world’s learning center that inspires sustainable thinking through a model 21st century ahupua`a where land is chief and man is steward

Our Mission

We protect and preserve the natural landscape and cultural assets of the ahupua`a of `Iole.

We inspire collaboration, leadership, and mindset shifts through a deep connection with the land, place-based education, and a pu‘uhonua retreat.

We model and pioneer sustainable practices to serve our Hawai`i community and the world.

Kohala Institute at ‘Iole provides a rich environment for discovery through place-based experiences that encourage connections with place, self, and others as a basis for developing and renewing relationships in preparation for challenging discussions; a neutral place where long-term solutions to longstanding challenges are collaboratively determined and embraced.

Our Values

Ha’aha’a – Gratitude, Humility

Ho’ihi – Respect for `āina, elemental spirits, self  & others

Kuleana – Accountability by fulfilling obligations

Wiwo’ole – Courage, fearless, to be bold, and adventurous

Pili `Āina – Engagement &/or developing a relationship through place-based experiences at `Iole
