GRACE Learning Journey

GRACE Learning Journey features custom place-based curriculum geared toward 4th/5th grade, 7th/8th grade, and high school students. Youth participants explore the interconnection between values and action through experiential learning on the ahupua’a, ‘Iole, a living classroom. Students delve into what the values of Gratitude, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Engagement mean to them, to others, and to the natural environment and how these values apply to their everyday lives through hands-on educational exercises. As students visit multiple sites on the ‘Iole ahupua’a from mauka to makai, they learn lessons that encompass and tie together the physical, cultural, and ecological landscapes of the ahupua’a. Kuleana to self, to the earth, and to community serves as the overarching theme for the program.

The Curriculum – Youth participants engage in a range of educational activities from various disciplines in the fields of Sustainability, Native Hawaiian Culture, the Arts and Contemplation. Sample activities include: Farming & Conservation Practices, Oli & Mele, Creative & Reflective Writing, Hula, Hiking, Scavenger Hunts, Leadership Training, Yoga & Meditation, and the design and implementation of community service projects once the program is complete.

The Learning Design – Students learn in both small and large groups from trained and experienced facilitators. The adult-student ratio is designed to ensure individual attention and a quality learning experience.

The Setting – The ahupua’a ‘Iole, mountain to sea, serves as a living classroom for our youth participants. At Kohala Institute at ‘Iole, we believe that opening to our natural environment awakens our responsibility to respect and care for the earth and that by strengthening our connection to our surroundings we strengthen our connection to one another.
